Hart Morris has created a truly gorgeous, sensitive, and creative setting of Sieblius’ Finlandia for handbells and cello. It begins with the solo melody line played by the cello with handchimes and then handbells subtly joining in a gentle and engaging interplay, which leads to a key change where the full hymn is first rung. The cello and handbell lines alternately accompany the other and share the melody with subtle rhythmic and LV sections throughout, adding texture and interest as the setting moves to another key change and a Maestoso section. Dynamics and expression play a very important part throughout, and sections of the melody are embedded in inner voicings from time to time. It moves to a glorious and dynamic musical climax … but then … well, the amazing ending will leave everyone holding their breath in rapt attention as the music gradually leads all to a calm, peaceful, and comforting ending.

Hart’s musical gifts are on full display in this intricate yet accessible setting and each time you listen to it, you will hear yet another subtle touch. This will definitely become a permanent part of your group’s worship and concert repertoire…
