Robert Lau is a well-known and beloved composer, organist, and professor who is also known for his arrangements of American hymn tunes. Lau’s setting of “I Love to Tell the Story” is beautifully transcribed for handbells by Shawn Gingrich and is mostly Rung with LV passages and perfectly-placed Shakes. It begins with the sonorous Singing Bell and LV bells in the treble supporting handchimes ringing the ‘first verse’ melody which then moves beautifully to bells ringing the ‘chorus.’ A key change leads to a legato and introspective ‘second verse’ in C-major followed by a 4-measure modulation to Db-major and a glorious ‘chorus’ final. A brilliant and dynamic key change back to the C-major ending will thrill and excite everyone! Those who are familiar with the words of this hymn are sure to be silently singing along with this setting which is true to the original hymn.
