This Christmas carol was written by John Henry Hopkins, Jr. in 1857 and has the distinction of being regarded as the “first widely popular Christmas carol written in America.” Composed in 6/8 time, it lends itself nicely to a jazzy 5/4 time signature; however, Jeff has interjected 3/4, 4/4, and 6/4 for added interest. It begins in f-minor and features a handchime section for a nice variety of texture and tone, returns to handbells and a nice segue to g-minor as it moves to the dynamic ending. Techniques include suspended and table mallet, LV, Sk and a few echoes. This will be a lovely holiday addition to your worship and concert repertoire!
