This amazing composition by Claude T. Smith, a revered composer of choral and band works, is based on the hymn tune, Lobe den Herren, and was originally commissioned for concert band.  Linda Boatright’s wonderful arrangement is faithful to the original work and she has created a masterful handbell setting, featuring effectively placed handbell techniques and expressions which beautifully emulate the original intent of the band instruments.

This original work is filled with excitement and is inspiring from beginning to end. The favorite hymn melody – Praise to the Lord, the Almighty – is present throughout in the many and complex voicings, ranges, and textures. Contrapuntal passages are especially engaging and the segues to various sections through key and tempo changes are beautifully crafted for bells in every way. Sixteenth note runs which occasionally appear are especially engaging and add to the joy of this work!  The Maestoso section rung on handchimes features the ever-faithful hymn setting, punctuated by exciting addition of handbell statements, all leading to the dramatic and totally fulfilling ending. Mere words cannot adequately describe the sheer joy and majesty of this very special work! This is certain to be a favorite in your group's repertoire!
