Festive Dance on Holy Manna
Composer: William Moore ca. 1829
Arranger: Kurt Meyer
Octaves Handbell: 3 - 6
Octaves Handchimes: 3 - 7
Level: 4
Holy Manna is one of the hymn tunes published in a shape-note tunebook in the early 19th century and is one of the earliest forms of American 'folk' hymn, attributed to William Moore. The original lyrics for this hymn were “Brethren, We Have Met Together.” Kurt has taken this simple, almost plaintive pentatonic melody and created an amazing arrangement with rhythm, techniques, and texture without sacrificing the simplicity. Varying ‘moods’ include dance-like to introspective, majestic, joyous, and feature dynamics and nuance. The addition of handchimes (which includes optional low bass in the 2’s) adds richness and texture, plus well-placed LV, echoes, gentle marts and malleted notes perfectly emphasize the unique character of this wonderful arrangement.
