Fred Gramann has crafted a unique and creative setting of the American folk hymn, “Poor Wayfaring Stranger” for handbells. It begins with only a hint of the tune in quarter notes while using the swing technique on sustained notes as the foundation for a gradual increase in energy through eighths notes and triplets. The continued development is engaging, expressive, and compelling – and the main theme is not heard until measure 61.The transition to the hymn tune is subtle, supported by a single suspended bell for a tolling effect while the handchime countermelody echoes the bell melody. The transition back to the ‘A’ section is subtle and again, gradually increases to the exciting and dynamic ending. This is truly an amazing setting of this favorite hymn tune unlike any other you have heard.
