Yellow Bird
YELLOW BIRD
Composers: Alan and Marilyn Bergman and Norman Luboff
Arranger: Gail Downey
Handbells: 5 octaves
Handchimes: optional 3 octaves E4 - C5
Optional percussion: claves, maracas, guiro
This favorite Caribbean tune was written by Michel Mauleart Monton in 1893 to accompany a Haitian Cerole poem by Oswald Durand. A collaboration among songwriter Alan and Marilyn Bergman and Norman Luboff (of choir fame) gained popularity in the 1950s. Gail has arranged this for handbells and featured perfectly placed stopped sounds that emphasize the syncopated rhythms and island feel. Addition of optional percussion will add to the charm of this delightful setting. In the absence of percussion, the two opening bell measures may be repeated as needed for the introduction.
