Handbells used: 4 - 7 octaves
Handchimes used: n/a
Level: 4+
This original work by Paul McKlveen is the winner of “Sounds of Nature” 2024 Bells of the Sound Competition contest… and a winner it is! It musically describes “various aspects of rivers – the majestic steady-flowing rivers, the slow, curving meanders, the raging river rapids, the waterfall and the plunge pool below.” This auditory adventure begins with singing belsl and the introduction of the lovely, lyrical main theme. In addition, tempo variations and key changes drive the experience forward while expressive LV phrases, table mallets, mart-lifts, brush damp, random sus bells, and shakes are so effective that one’s eyes can close and imagine every aspect of this river journey. The majority of this title is Level 3, but to execute the techniques accurately and move through key changes and accidentals in a few dynamic measures pushes this to Level 4. The demo recording is representative of the work but the true beauty can only happen in a live and dynamic performance by your group! This is a must-have for the more advanced handbell choirs!
