Thomas Blanton has done a masterful job of creating a handbell adaptation of this movement from Bizet’s 1872 orchestral work. The opening is immediately engaging with the mart-lift pattern of G#-E-F# scored in a separate staff – representing a carillon sounding its joyful tones. It should be noted there are ‘Rung’ notes occasionally included in this staff. This is written in A-B-A form with the joyous, contrasting melody which includes frequent TD notes – all of which shine above the bass foundation and the ongoing mart-lifts. The calm and lyrical ‘B’ section is a lovely contrast in tone and color – and the return of the ‘A’ section is exciting and fulfilling to the glorious end. This is certain to become a must-have addition to your group’s repertoire!
